Description

Zardosi Banarasi sarees as we know them today, came to existence with the arrival of the Mughals into India. The art of weaving Khaddi Georgette Banarasi sarees took root when the artisans brought in by Mughals established their trades in Banaras. During this period, the weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold and silver threads became the speciality of Banaras. The intricately designed flower and foliated motifs, kalga and bel are often found in the weaving. This is among the signature characteristics of the Georgette Banarasi brocade.

There are four main varieties of Banarasi sari, which includes pure banarasi silk sarees(Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk; Georgette, and Shattir; all of which are hand woven sarees.

The designs available on these masterpieces created by the artisans are: Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.

Banarsi khaddi georgette/chiffon sarees are very light weight hand woven zari border and boota saree with finest ‘cutwork’ technique from the ghats of Banaras. These sarees are also known as khaddi chiffon saree and khaddi silk sarees by many of the weavers and merchants, but technically the fabric is pure chiffon. This crinkly fabric is renowned for its softness, skin-friendliness and the gorgeous drape that it presents. ‘RangKaat’ is an exceptional example of classic design because of the difficulty involved in making it, which eventually led to it being rarely used these days. It uses multi-coloured warp and weft which literally translated to English means ‘cutting of colour’.
