Description

Chikankari, also known as shadow work, is a delicate embroidery from Lucknow. Chikan, in the literal sense, means embroidery. The simple and precise, yet intricate hand stitch gives a classy feel to the garment. But, a more prevalent belief associated with this brilliant craft is that Noorjahan, Queen of King Jahangir introduced the Persian art in the 17th century and is credited for popularizing Chikankari in India.

The prominent feature of this embroidery is the stitch itself. It is a simple three-step process that begins with the desired design being engraved on a wooden block stamp. The design is then block printed on the cloth using age-old indigo dye and ‘safeda’ dyes, which is then cut into the desired shape and size. And the next step involves setting the cloth in small parts in a frame to do the manual needlework which could take 20 days to six months to get finished. The last step is the washing of the fabric itself, to remove any trace of the ink used to transfer the design from the block.

‘Chikankari’ is generally done on lighter fabrics to highlight the intricate embroidery work. Cotton, Georgette, Chiffon, Silk and Crepe are among the few fabrics that are used due to the texture of the fabric enabling the fine needlework.

How to Care for Chikankari Fabrics:

  • Use cold water to wash chikankari work fabrics, as hot water can damage the fabric. Avoid scrubbing or scraping off stains that might have appeared on the garment. Gently rub the stain with a piece of chalk before washing it in cold water.
  • Don’t dry chikankari work fabrics in direct sunlight for very long periods of time, as this will cause fading and discoloration.
  • Avoid wearing during exercise since sweat tends to soak through fabrics quickly.
  • Dry clean lightly soiled garments and only if absolutely necessary – do not dry clean regularly. This will reduce the shine from the fabric and dull the colours of the garment.
  • For better care after use, Charak/Polishing is recommended to give a crisper look. Contact here for your Charak/Polishing needs.
