Ikat is an elaborate dyeing process done with silk or cotton fabrics. The term “Ikat” itself is a derivation from the Malay word ‘mengikat’ which means to tie or to bind. The Ikat patterns are dyed and bonded into the yarns before the fabric is woven. This distinguishes it from the ‘Tie and Dye’ process where the woven fabric is dyed. Ikat involves tying the yarns as per the patterns one wishes to produce and then dyeing them. These dyed yarns are then used as either warp or weft or both. The warp ikat is the simplest while warp-weft ikat; known as patola or double ikat in India, is the toughest. One needs patience and a keen visual sense to develop a design. Indian Ikat is greatly admired by the fashion designers around the world.
