Description
India is the second-largest producer of tussar silk, and the exclusive producer of Indian tussar (also known as kosa silk/tropical tussar), which is largely tended to by tribals. Produced mainly in India, Tussar silk is considered more textured than cultivated Bombyx or “mulberry” silk, but has shorter fibres, making it less durable. As most of the cocoons are collected from the forest, it is considered by many as a forest product.
Tussar is highly valued for its natural dull, gold sheen. The dull gold texture that it radiates, works as a suitable base for embroideries as well as print motifs that have been inspired by nature. Tussar silk is a lot more textured than any other variety of Silk. The fabric is also cooler than the other varieties and is a lot more porous, therefore, breathable. Being cooler than the other varieties of Silk makes Tussar extremely wearable in warmer parts of the world.
