Description

One of the oldest forms of embroidery originating from India, its origins can be traced back to the pre-Vedic age (prior to 1500 BCE). While the word kantha has no certain etymological root, it is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word ‘kontha’, meaning rags.

Traditionally, old cotton saris, lungis and dhotis, which had turned incredibly soft through wear, were used to make kanthas. The thread for the stitching is drawn out from the fabric itself. Around five to seven fabrics would be layered together, with lighter coloured fabrics on the outside so the stitch and pattern were discernible. The stitch would cover the entire cloth to provide strength.

The interesting thing in this embroidery is that the entire cloth is covered with running stitches, displaying beautiful motifs, of flowers animals and birds, and geometrical shapes, as well as themes from everyday activities. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slight wrinkled wavy effect.

Bangalore Silk is known for its simplicity, purity, and texture of Silk, which is meticulously produced in the silk farms of Bangalore, Karnataka. These silk farms have existed for several years now and was initiated in 1898 by the honorable Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. The initial setup and knowhow was provided by Japanese sericulture experts and with the passage of time the ‘bangalori silk’ has gained immense popularity.
