Description

Pashmina is a super fine quality of wool that comes from a particular species of goat and is synonymous with a super soft and super warm luxury shawl that is indigenous to the beautiful valley of Kashmir.

How is ‘Pashmina’ different from ‘Cashmere’? Pashmina is made from the wool that is obtained from the Changthangi goats. It is super fine and each of its fibres has a diameter of around 10 to 15 microns. Pashmina wool can only be spun by hand. Pashmina wool is also quite rare. Whereas, the wool for cashmere shawls can be obtained from any kind of goat and not just the Changthangi goat. It has a diameter of about 15 to 18 microns. This wool is super fine too but not as fine as the Pashmina wool. This is the major difference between Pashmina and Cashmere. Moreover, Cashmere wool can be spun using machines.

‘Cashmere’ is, in fact, an Anglicised term for Pashmina. During the 18th century, when Europeans visited India and returned back to their countries with various Pashmina shawls as gifts, instead of calling them ‘Pashmina’ they referred to them as ‘Cashmere’ (denoting the place where it belongs- Kashmir).

What makes a Pashmina shawl or scarf so expensive is the process that goes behind it. Since everything is done using hands, it can take several days, and in some cases months, to craft a single shawl. Another factor that makes it expensive is the rarity of the wool.

How to care for your Pashmina

  • Store it in a moisture free and ventilated area. Your wardrobe is the best place. Store your Pashmina in a muslin cloth to avoid the development of lint or short fibers that separate the surface of cloth or yarn. Fold it neatly inside out in moth-proof bag. Keep the Pashmina in a drawer or storage box with dried Azadirachta indica or Indian Lilac sachets or lavender sachets to repel moths.
  • Do not use naphthalene balls while storing the Pashmina as it can mar its beauty and give it a permanent smell of mothballs.
  • Never expose your Pashmina to direct heat or extreme sunlight as it can damage the garment’s texture.
  • Brush the shawl, scarf, or stole after every wear as they hoard dust easily.
  • Never hang a Pashmina in the closet as it can cause the fabric to stretch and lose its shape. Instead, always fold and stack it neatly to keep the material crisp.
  • Steam Ironing Recommended after every two wear to avoid pilling.
  • Professional Dry Clean is recommended.
