Description
Banarasi sarees as we know them today, came to existence with the arrival of the Mughals into India. The art of weaving Khaddi Georgette Banarasi sarees took root when the artisans brought in by Mughals established their trades in Banaras. During this period, the weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold and silver threads became the speciality of Banaras. The intricately designed flower and foliated motifs, kalga and bel are often found in the weaving. This is among the signature characteristics of the Georgette Banarasi brocade.
There are four main varieties of Banarasi sari, which includes pure banarasi silk sarees(Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk; Georgette, and Shattir; all of which are hand woven sarees. The designs available on these masterpieces created by the artisans are: Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.
Katan silk is the fine, soft and delicately lustrous kind of silk that has made Banarasi renowned the world over. Katan silk fabrics are made using the finest quality of Mulberry Silk in both the warp and the weft, woven in a plain weave.
Tha Paithani weaving was prevalent in the western region of Maharashtra, and this embroidery technique is named after the said region. The oldest weaving technique for the creation of multicolored woven patterns was the tapestry technique, using non-continuous weft threads. The technique uses multicolored silk weft threads to create intricate patterns on a gold background. The overall effect is similar to that of meenakari (enameling on gold jewelry). The Paithani saris were woven in heavy silk with borders carrying extra warp patterns; only the cross border was worked in gold using the Paithani technique of multiple weft silks, in interlocking tapestry. The design of the cross border had a rich gold surface, enclosed by borders woven in the tapestry technique; sometimes the central section had extra weft silk patterns of mango or shrub motifs.
